coffee table style

13 Dec

Ogling coffee table setups has been a problem for me.  I’m a sucker for a good tray and such a sucker for good-looking books.  When I go to a bookstore, I’m intrigued the most by a gorgeous hardcover with a great design.  Frankly, it could be written on how to make a bed and I wouldn’t care.  Would it look good in a stack?  Probably.

So, I have an eclectic mix of cookbooks (that I don’t cook from) on my coffee table.  Most of them I bought very used for three bucks.  Thrift stores are a charm for these things.

Coffee Table Setup--theSpunkySapphire.wordpress.comI stumbled, actually, across this amazing tray at Target (I have a problem) and knew it was the perfect shape and size and color.  Tossed this great orange vase on top of the books and added some thrift-store bud vases with some stunning fresh daisies and the setup is complete!

Fresh stems are always a good thing.yellow daisy-white bud vase--theSpunkySapphire.wordpress.comI’m always changing things up in my space and always have.  Lately, though, I’m enjoying finding some staples and really defining my style.  Obviously, I keep it interesting and drop in an odd thing here and there.

What do you think about coffee table trays?  Do they become collect-all’s for you or inspire you to keep it clean for prettiness’ sake?

christmas paper

9 Dec

I would say that Christmas (well, any) gift wrapping and packaging is my favorite thing–next to event planning, of course.  Finding the perfect paper to creating those perfect creases to tying some lush ribbon into a big bow to topping with a pretty tag….ah, it all gets me.

I’ve had my eye out lately for the perfect look for this Christmas and my big pile of gifts awaiting the wrap, and Target, of course, did not disappoint.  (Because, does it ever?  No.)  I don’t do the “typical” Christmas wrap of ornaments, snowflakes, Santa, snowmen because it’s not me.  Also, I like to use wrapping paper all year and need my choices to do double-duty for other events and possible photo backdrops.

Look what I found.  Boom.  Amazing.

blooms and pink shoes

15 Oct

If you’re Canadian and reading this, I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend with your favorite people.  If you’re my American readers, sorry you had to be back at it Monday morning.  I really enjoyed having Monday off to do whatever I wanted!

My weekend was completely relaxing and I’m definitely recharged!  It’s officially fall around here and the weather was breezy and fall-like.  I have always enjoyed pulling out all the layers of clothing and getting decked out.  I rarely wear boots unless there is a foot of snow on the ground, so, for me, fall means all my colorful flats come out!  Saturday, while running errands for a surprise birthday dinner, the pinks ones put a spring in my step.

Pink flats and fall!--theSpunkySapphire.wordpress.comMy contribution to the weekend’s dinner were the menu cards, plating and serving, and the amazing floral table runner.  Friday after work, I collected a massive bouquet of blooms and proceeded to make this…

rustic chic reception

7 Oct

Part of the reason I think September flew by was because I was planning this significant event for my brother and sister-in-law.  They got married on September 21 in Alberta, and as courtesy to all of the Grand Rapids, Michigan guests, we hosted an open-house-style reception for them the following Saturday there.  My mom, who has always had serious amounts of faith in my creativity and has been my biggest cheerleader in starting this business (hey, mom!), asked me to design it all!  Needless to say, I was excited because, as I’ve said before, event planning is my jam, and it was for my brother and his wife!  Actually, I’m still excited because now I get to show all of you!

The bride was game to be surprised with the look and was not interested in carrying over the design from the weekend before (although, I did ask!).  As I told you earlier, when I found this inspiration board, I knew it was the look we were going for.  I knew she liked a little rustic chic, and the groom loves his orange; he’s painted everything from his room to his Mustang in the vibrant hue.  But, I guess you could say it all started with the fabric.

Isn’t it fantastic?!  Obviously, I ordered it right away and began pulling things from my home that would match.  Every throw pillow I own fit their scheme as well as multiple vases/containers I have.  I literally filled up the trunk of our car with just decor items.

As you may remember from Girl Bash, I created a dessert bar backdrop and wanted to use that in this event as well.  Having that backdrop can really pull a room together when you’re working with a blank slate and everything else is table height.  It brings the ceiling down and makes the room more cohesive.

That banner was simply perfect!  It is a custom piece and was SO much fun to design.  Hanging it definitely was a smashing final touch!

Everything about this day was a family affair.  My sister spray-painted dozens of sticks gold for me and created the chicken-wire photo frame that featured images from their wedding day.  Together we rolled bunches of silverware and tied with fabric pieces and stabbed pecks of apple favors with the awesome little thank you tags!

The favor table was beautiful.  Placed at the entrance, it gave guests a glimpse of what was to come with it’s zesty fabric runner and tipped over crate spilling the apple favors.  It featured a sign with a plane motif since the bride and groom did plenty of flying to see each other during their long-distance relationship.

Something I’ve seen and really loved at weddings (or any party, really), is a seating area.  It’s simply cozy!  This area allows for people to sit and chat in a more comfortable environment than the dining table and is a change of pace.  I used rustic crates and all my throw pillows to create a small seating area, and it was full the entire event (as you can see here)!

The ladies of the catering the school PTA catering that I used to work with did a fantastic job with the simple buffet menu and the dessert bar.

Congratulations, again, to my brother and his beautiful wife!  It was an absolute joy to design and execute this and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

life, stuff, and crazy business

24 Sep

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve been here!  Between designing a fabulously awesome wedding reception for this weekend to brainstorming my brand and deciding what I want the most to researching and learning so much about blog design, I’ve been consciously neglecting writing.  Sorry to leave you hanging!  I’m so happy to have everyone who’s visited despite my slacking off!  I really appreciate you!

So, if you follow my Instagram (and I highly suggest you do–especially this weekend as I’ll be posting images from the party!), you may have seen a little of what I’ve been up to.  I love every bit of it!  Wedding design is my jam, guys.  Happy Tags for thank you favors--theSpunkySapphire.wordpress.comLove banner for dessert

Make sure you check the sneak peeks out this weekend to see how it all comes together.  I’m so excited to bring the image in my head to life!

In addition to wedding design, I’ve been redesigning this little blog and really honing in on what I want to be about, etc.  Seriously?  This takes time.  It’s a safe bet to assume I’m learning patience.  Weird that this is what it took!  I honestly had no idea how much actually goes into a successful, gorgeously designed webpage/blog!  I mean, I knew it was time-consuming and a labor of love, but wow!  This is intense.

With that and focusing on making a brand I’m proud of, I’m getting new photos of myself for it tomorrow!  I’m really excited to get those heels immortalized in photos!  I’m a shoe fiend and don’t get to wear fun ones very often except on weekends, so this should be good.
headshot outfit idea--theSpunkySapphire.wordpress.comThese sound like they are going to be a blast, but I’m a little nervous (well, nervous-excited) to be in front of the camera for something so significant as this.

Anyway, I’ll wrap up this ramble, but just wanted to throw it out there that life is amazingly crazy and I’ve been working hard behind the scenes on a lot of things that will very soon be out here for you all to see.  Until then, I really appreciate your presence here and can’t wait to bring you more amazing content to inspire as well as a new look!

Modern green and orange color palette--theSpunkySapphire.wordpress.comoh lovely day

This is the gorgeous inspiration for my latest event.  More will follow in the next little bit, but for now, I just wanted to share because I LOVE it and I’m SO excited about how everything in my head will turn out.  I’m thinking: amazing.

Also, how supercool is that chevron fabric?!  Can’t wait to get my hands on some.  I’ll be honest: I never really liked the fabric store as much as I think I might now!  Maybe I am related to my sister after all (Hey, M! Love ya!).

What do you think?  Are you as in love with it as I am?  For tomorrow’s Paper Poste, I even found an invitation suite that fits into this amazingly well!

girl bash

15 Aug

Over a month ago, I hosted a fantastic party in honor of the incredible women I have become friends with since moving a year ago.  If you follow me on Instagram, you would have gotten a peek into the gorgeousness while I was creating it.  I’ve finally been able to curate and edit the images, and I can’t wait for you to see them!  Enjoy the pretty!

A few weeks ago, I teased you with a few images from the Girl Bash I hosted at the beginning of July.  I seriously wish I could throw those every day.  I would never get bored!  Planning, designing, and throwing events is what I do best and I love watching guests thoroughly enjoy themselves.

I teamed up with one of my friends (Rachel from Rach’s Cakes) and with her cake expertise, we had something to eat at that party.  I’ve said before and I’ll continue to say it: she has way WAY more talent than I do in that department.  That’s why I recruited her.

I gave her the overall theme: pink, orange, gold, chevron, and polka dots.  I also told her I wanted a cake for display as well as cake pops to eat, gave her a few ideas that I had seen done and liked, and told her to go nuts!  And she definitely did!  Just look at the detail in these images!
